The Connecticut Trail Census collects two types of data:

Count data is collected through the use of Infrared (IR) counters set up on each participating trail. The counters have sensors that can detect a change in temperature passing by the counter. Each time the sensor detects this temperature change, a use is registered.

The IR counters are calibrated using volunteer conducted “manual counts”. The manual counts are compared to the count registered by the IR counter and a calibration factor is established. For more information, visit Webinars & Training Materials.

Survey data is collected during two survey sessions (spring and fall) on each trail. The survey consists of multiple choice and open ended questions that touch on a variety of trail use topics such as distance traveled to use the trail, primary reason for using the trail, and demographic information about who is using the trail.
